Coming up on Morning Edition:  Art Shanty Projects, an immersive art installation that happens each year on frozen Lake Harriet in Minneapolis, had to cut its event short this year due to warm temperatures. In a plea for community support, the organization cited “climate chaos” as the reason for closing early. Neal Sorensen is co-chair of the Art Shanty Projects board. He joins host Cathy Wurzer to talk about what warm winters mean for the project.

Coming up at 9 a.m., special coverage from NPR.  The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments on Thursday over whether former president Donald Trump can be barred from appearing on Colorado’s presidential primary ballot because of his role in the Jan. 6, 2020, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Trump is asking the high court to reverse a Colorado Supreme Court decision that the 14th Amendment disqualifies him from holding office.
 
Feeding Our Future founder says state regulators hid documents, used burner phones

The alleged leader of a conspiracy to steal hundreds of millions of dollars in hunger relief funds is herself claiming wrongdoing on the part of state officials who oversee the programs.

Feeding Our Future founder Aimee Bock said staff at the Minnesota Department of Education intentionally mislabeled documents and used burner phones to thwart a lawsuit.

What else we're watching:

TikTok: A steady stream of funding from Minnesota’s universal school meals legislation that passed in 2023 has the potential to help remake the way lunch is done across the state. 

Chef serves up special feast to welcome the year of the dragon. Rainbow Chinese Restaurant in Minneapolis has a special menu for lunar new year. This will be the first time since the pandemic that chef Tammy Wong has been able to welcome guests in her dining room for the occasion. 

Warm weather brings ticks early to Minnesota. The Metropolitan Mosquito Control District reported the first deer tick spotting in the Twin Cities on Monday. Since then, the district has continued to receive reports.

Creator of award-winning Netflix show ‘Beef’ on his Minnesota roots, writing the show. Last year a Hollywood writer with Minnesota roots launched a streaming sensation by imagining a road rage beef amplified to the max. Lee Sung Jin created the popular A24 Netflix show, “Beef,” released in April 2023. 

Recent FAFSA updates and delays are causing headaches in Minnesota. MPR News host Tom Crann talked with Liz Navratil, higher education reporter for the Star Tribune,  about recent FAFSA delays and how they will affect Minnesotans.

U.S. Department of Education launches investigation of Edina school district
. The case comes after two Edina High School students filed a federal complaint late last year, alleging the school district discriminated against them when they were suspended for using  a pro-Palestinian chant during a walkout to protest the Israel-Hamas war.

Environmental advocates present plan to close HERC trash incinerator by 2025. The HERC currently takes in about half of Hennepin County’s trash. It burns waste to produce electricity, which is then sold to Xcel Energy.
