‘Realize how magical it is here’: Meet 6 local authors with romance novels set in Minnesota

Romance is having a moment right now. Library patrons wait months to read an Emily Henry book, viewers swoon at Bridgerton and BookTok is the new place for recommendations.

In our neck of the woods, Minnesota is nurturing a community of romance writers and readers. For Valentine’s Day, MPR News spoke with six Minnesota authors about their upcoming romance novels, all set in our favorite state.

Prepare to shout from the rooftop of the IDS building “I love romance novels!” Because what could be better than a love story with the backdrop of our state (including a hockey romance, a meet-cute at the Mall of America and a fantasy romance in West St. Paul)? Not much.
 
House votes to impeach Mayorkas, a historic rebuke of sitting Cabinet member by Republicans

The U.S. House voted Tuesday to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, with the Republican majority determined to punish the Biden administration over its handling of the U.S-Mexico border after failing last week in a politically embarrassing setback.

The evening roll call proved tight, with Speaker Mike Johnson’s threadbare GOP majority unable to handle many defectors or absences in the face of staunch Democratic opposition to impeaching Mayorkas, the first Cabinet secretary facing charges in nearly 150 years.
 
What else we're watching:

The CDC may be reconsidering its COVID isolation guidance. The planned change was reported in The Washington Post on Tuesday, attributed to several unnamed CDC officials. Currently, people who test positive are advised to stay home for at least five days to reduce the chances of spreading the coronavirus to others.

Mediators are in Cairo working to secure a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. The high-stakes meeting is taking place as Israel signals it may soon launch a ground invasion in Rafah, on the southern tip of Gaza, where nearly 1.5 million Palestinians are sheltering.

Former Timberwolves player arrested on family violence charge. Former NBA player Bryn Forbes has been arrested on a family violence charge.  He signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2022 and was waved in February 2023.

What is Temu, and should you let your parents order from it? Temu's Super Bowl ads promise to let people "shop like a billionaire" — and they've helped the Chinese-owned online discount marketplace expand in the U.S. at a breathtaking pace.

Grover the Muppet says he's a reporter. Not for long, joke his beleaguered peers. "As a news reporter ... I am confident to report that you are so special and amazing," Grover tweeted. Some responded with jokes about him getting laid off, a common occurrence in today's media world.

How Hollywood art directors are working to keep their sets out of the landfill.
Sets are often discarded after productions, with thousands of tons of materials going into dumpsters each year. Now art directors and their allies are pushing for a more sustainable approach.
