Cleanup continues at scene of train derailment in Raymond

Cleanup will continue Friday at the scene of Thursday’s train derailment and fire in the western Minnesota community of Raymond.

The Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office said late Thursday that crews started moving some of the 22 derailed cars to better access the handful still burning.

The federal Environmental Protection Agency responded to Raymond to monitor the air for “particulate matter and volatile organic compounds.” As of Thursday afternoon, the EPA said it had not found any particulate matter levels of concern “and so far, low levels below health concerns of VOCs have been detected only immediately downwind of the cars in a non-populated area.”

What else we're watching:
As lawmakers dole out record surplus, many say they need more. With a historic budget surplus and a longer-than-usual stretch before the legislative deadline to adjourn, groups that feel short-changed by DFL budget targets are asking for more. 

The new place to live in Minnesota? Wright County. The population of central Minnesota’s Wright County has grown by more than 4 percent since 2020, making it the state’s fastest growing county according to new estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau Thursday.

A Park Rapids Treaty Rights and Anishinaabe Culture Museum will open this summer. Winona LaDuke, an activist and member of the Mississippi Band Anishinaabe, is leading a team to open Giiwedinong: The Museum and Cultural Center of the North.

Donald Trump indicted; 1st ex-president charged with crime. Trump, who has denied any wrongdoing and has repeatedly attacked the investigation, called the indictment “political persecution” and predicted it would damage Democrats in 2024.
