Repairing ‘damage’ or perfecting policies? Fix bills take center stage at the Capitol

After Democrats moved landmark policy and spending changes in 2023, Republicans say they’ll aim to roll back changes or at least have a greater say in proposed corrections bills.

Repair bills aren’t new. Lawmakers revise and update laws each year to catch mistakes or adjust for shifting realities.

But after a 2023 legislative session that saw dozens of substantial changes to state spending and policies — spanning from legalizing adult use marijuana, cementing the right to abortion in state law, guaranteeing free school meals and more — there’ve been a higher volume of clean-up bills needed to tie up loose ends.
 
St. Paul teachers, schools end negotiations for weekend but will pick up on Monday

After nearly 40 hours of mediation talks this weekend, St. Paul Public Schools and the union representing teachers failed to reach an agreement on a new contract.

The school district said there was “meaningful progress,” but didn’t provide details. Officials with the St. Paul Federation of Educators, the union that represents teachers, were less optimistic, writing in a statement, “Our union thought we were making meaningful progress toward an agreement. However, those many hours of discussions have yet to produce a path to settlement.”

The two sides are scheduled to talk again on Monday.
