You know the drill — it's time for snow! The first system dropped several inches of snow overnight across much of Minnesota. The second system will arrive Sunday. Get the latest weather news on Updraft.
Coming up on Morning Edition: Minnesota is in the midst of a one-two punch from Mother Nature. After a dry, mild winter, we're starting spring with snow — and a lot of it. St. Paul Public Works Director Sean Kershaw joins MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to talk about how the capital city is preparing for a messy weekend.
Coming up at 11 a.m.: Journalist Susan Casey descended to some of the deepest parts of the ocean in tiny submersibles while researching her new book “The Underworld.” Casey joins host Kerri Miller on this week’s Big Books and Bold Ideas to share stories about her dives and what she experienced in the abyss.
A storm system dropped several inches of snow overnight across much of Minnesota, leaving slippery roads for the Friday morning commute. Plows were out in the Twin Cities and across the rest of the state, as attention turned to a potentially much larger storm on the way this weekend.
Winter storm watches for the second storm go into effect for most of the state starting late Saturday or early Sunday, and extending into Monday and Tuesday.

Taprooms that brew and serve craft beers seem to be everywhere in the Twin Cities these days, but one New Brighton-based beverage maker is offering a non-alcoholic, family-friendly alternative to the taproom.
Root beer is the company’s bestseller. Cream soda and black cherry round out the top three. The Sunday Purple is popular during football seasons and Pontoon Punch is a favorite during the summer.
Customers can fill out the Sweet 16 bracket of new soda flavors on the Northern Soda website or in person at the taproom. The more popular flavors move on to the next round, the Carbonate 8. The champion flavor that prevails will be selected to be the next seasonal soda.
Since 2016, Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District has been intensely competitive and attracted many millions of dollars in campaign spending. Republicans have it high on their radar this year as they work to unseat three-term DFL Rep. Angie Craig. But first, they’ll have to settle on a nominee.
In addition to incumbency, Craig has a massive fundraising advantage. Craig has raked in more than $3 million for this race so far. That’s more than five times as much as her Republican challengers raised combined.
What else we're watching:
‘Ban on book bans’ introduced in Minnesota Legislature. The American Library Association reports there were 1,247 attempts to censor library materials in 2023, challenging more than 4,200 titles. That’s up around 2,600 titles targeted in the previous year.
From Sahan Journal: Judge rejects Camp Nenookaasi’s request for temporary ban on evictions a second time. U.S. District Judge Eric Tostrud issued his ruling Monday, saying that the camp’s motion for a temporary restraining order was moot because it was not specific to the camp’s current location, and because there is a lack of evidence that the city has impending plans for another eviction.
