We have a wet and windy Tuesday in store for much of Minnesota. Periods of rain and thunder will dominate the weather through the day into Tuesday night. Showers will become more widely scattered Wednesday. Get the latest weather news on Updraft.
Coming up on Morning Edition: Minnesota Lynx Head Coach and President of Basketball Operations Cheryl Reeve joins us to talk about last night's WNBA draft. And we hear from a fire prevention specialist with the Minnesota DNR about why wildfire risk is so high right now.
Coming up at 9 a.m.: Minnesota communities have been rethinking the role of police in schools. MPR News host Angela Davis talks with current and former school resource officers about the role of SROs and whether they can keep schools safer without sending teenagers into the criminal justice system.
And we want to hear from you, too. Have you worked as a school resource officer? How do you think your relationships with students created a safer environment? If you’re a parent, a student, a former student or work in a school, what’s your experience with an SRO? And, how has the departure of school resource officers changed your school? Call 651-227-6000 or 800-242-2828 during the 9 a.m. hour.
A bill at the Capitol that would transfer ownership of some state-owned forest lands to the White Earth Band of Ojibwe has sparked outcry from non-Native neighbors, and prompted calls for dialogue to help ease the conflict.
The land return is critical to the band’s future, said White Earth Tribal Chair Michael Fairbanks. And he wants people to understand that the move can’t be separated from what happened more than a century ago on the same land — actions he referred to as a land grab.
“You know, at one time, all the land in the forest was our land. The land grab acts tore it all apart,” he said.
Clawhammer Mike and his banjo are Stone Arch Bridge fixtures. In 2022, he played at the Stone Arch over 100 times. Last year, 75. He’s exchanged life stories with people more times than he can count. But this week, with the two-year bridge construction beginning, Clawhammer had to say his temporary goodbye. It was a tough one.
“Some days people have stories that are really tough to hear, but most days I get home feeling fulfilled by the stuff people tell me,” he said. “And people always stop me on the bridge —especially here — to talk about whatever’s on their mind.”
