Coming up on Morning Edition: Tuesday afternoon, part of St. Paul's St. Anthony Avenue will be restored to its original name — Rondo Avenue. It honors the historically Black Rondo neighborhood that was split by the construction of I-94 in the 1950s and ‘60s. ReConnect Rondo Board Chair Marvin Roger Anderson joins us to share more about what made the renaming possible and what it means to the community.

As Goodhue County shifts further right, compromise is harder to find

Goodhue County’s evolution from a moderately conservative area to a deeper red region is a window into broader political trends that track along stark geographic lines, said Larry Jacobs, a political science professor at the University of Minnesota and the director of the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance.

Rural areas have become more Republican, while Democrats are “sorting into suburban and urban areas,” said Jacobs. The result is more political polarization.

“Minnesota is catching up with the rest of the country,” he said.
 
Attorneys outline cases as first Feeding Our Future trial starts

Attorneys provided a preview of their cases as the first federal trial to stem from the Feeding Our Future investigation opened Monday. Prosecutors say seven defendants schemed to steal $47 million from taxpayer-funded child nutrition programs by falsifying attendance rosters and food invoices.

They were allegedly part of a much larger conspiracy involving dozens of people tied to the Twin Cities nonprofit.

Minnesota GOP sees congressional nomination chases spill into summer after weekend conventions. The outcomes in the 7th Congressional District — where U.S. Rep. Michelle Fischbach is seeking a third term — and in the 2nd Congressional District that is deemed a pickup opportunity for the GOP underscore lingering fractions within the party over its future direction.

Listen: Student journalists from two Twin Cities universities share the latest on divestment protests. Student journalists from Hamline University in St. Paul and the University of Minnesota Twin Cities joined MPR News host Emily Bright to talk about the protests on their campuses.

The Twins’ new home-run sausage is fueling their seven-game winning streak. The presence of the sausage ignited a flurry of hits, including back-to-back homers from Edouard Julien and Ryan Jeffers in the same inning. After Carlos Santana homered in the eighth, Jeffers tossed the sausage to the first baseman on his return to the dugout and the home-run celebration was born.

Walz taps assistant commissioner to lead new child-focused department. Tikki Brown has been part of the team planning for the new department since it was announced in 2023. It’s set to open in July and oversee programs four young children currently divided up among four state agencies.

New prosecutors will handle case against trooper charged in killing of motorist. A few hundred people rallied in support of Minnesota state trooper Ryan Londregan at the Hennepin County Government Center Monday while prosecutors asked for a short delay in order to add four new attorneys from an outside firm to join the case.
