Researchers reveal U’s painful past with Minnesota’s Indigenous people

A massive new report details the University of Minnesota’s long history of mistreating the state’s Native people and lays out recommendations, including “perpetual reparations,” to improve relations between the U and Minnesota’s 11 tribal nations.  

Totaling more than 500 pages, the report released Tuesday marks the first time a major American university has critically examined its history with Native people, said Shannon Geshick, executive director of the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council and a member of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa.
 
What else we're watching:
Marijuana bill within sight of up-or-down votes at Minnesota Capitol. The bill to make marijuana legal is down to its final few committees ahead of pivotal votes in the Minnesota Legislature. Those floor debates could happen yet this month, although more negotiations lie ahead.

How late spring snow cover is affecting Minnesota farmers and ranchers. Ranchers began calving season during the first week of April in a blizzard. Meanwhile, farmers are waiting for the snow to melt so their work can begin.

Rochester Public Schools says data was breached. After identifying suspicious activity in its technology systems late last week, Rochester Public Schools  confirmed that an “outside actor” had gained access to data in its system.

Twin Cities rapper Lewiee Blaze wants to give you goosebumps. When it comes to his musical process, Lewiee Blaze focuses on storytelling. Minneapolis and the issues the community faces are very close to his heart, telling his community’s stories through music is what he believes his purpose to be.

Report: Railroads cut costs, prioritize speed and efficiency over safety. A ProPublica report on a railroad cost-cutting approach called Precision Scheduled Railroading (PSR) concludes a strategy that employs longer trains with fewer employees puts profits ahead of safety in the freight rail industry.
