⚖️ Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty will talk to reporters Monday morning about why her office is dropping its case against state trooper Ryan Londregan in the shooting death of Ricky Cobb II. Editor Brandt Williams joins us to talk about the case.

🍁 Roughly 9,000 border patrol workers in Canada are poised to strike if disagreements on a contract cannot be resolved. The strike would functionally halt any type of cross-country commerce or travel and potentially impact agriculture industries as well. Joining us to talk more about this is Paul Vieira of the Wall Street Journal. He's based in Ottawa and covers Canadian affairs.

Charges dropped against state trooper Ryan Londregan in the shooting death of Ricky Cobb II

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty announced Sunday she will drop charges against state trooper Ryan Londregan in the death of Ricky Cobb II. Cobb was killed during a traffic stop in Minneapolis last year.

In a court hearing last month, Londregan pleaded not guilty to murder, manslaughter and assault charges. He also asked for a speedy trial in the case.

Moriarty said new evidence would make it impossible to prove unauthorized use of force.
 
BCA releases new details in shooting that killed Minneapolis police officer Jamal Mitchell

The BCA said Minneapolis police officer Jamal Mitchell was the first to arrive on scene after responding to a report of a double shooting near 22nd Street and Blaisdell Avenue.

Mitchell said over the radio that he saw two men with injuries in the street. The BCA said one of those men was the alleged shooter, 35-year-old Mustafa Ahmed Mohamed. The BCA said the other person was a bystander who had been shot and whose name has not been released.

Minneapolis police officer Jamal “Molly” Mitchell had “a heart for people.”

Whether it was flashing his big smile or chatting up new people, Mitchell always tried to uplift the people around him.

“If he saw somebody on the corner with a pan, he's going to dig in his pocket and he's going to give,” said Janet Raper-Edwards, Mitchell’s mother. “He just loved people. You know, he just loved helping people. That's just how Jamal was, he always wanted to be a help to somebody.”
 
What else we're watching:

🌉 Stillwater Lift Bridge to close for repairs on June 4. The Stillwater Lift Bridge will remain down on Tuesday to replace an electrical power cable. The lift schedule will be suspended, though smaller boats and watercraft will still be able to pass below the bridge.

🦟 Tick and mosquito season off to a strong start in the Twin Cities. Abundant rainfall in April and May has led to a bumper crop of mosquitoes across parts of the Twin Cities. But the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District says it's too early to tell if the trend will continue.

🚨 Minneapolis police investigate a pair of weekend shooting deaths. Police are investigating two shooting deaths on Minneapolis’s north side after finding two men lying on the ground with gunshot wounds Saturday. The scene was all too familiar for officers still processing a shooting just two days earlier on the city’s south side.

🍚 Doing dim sum right: A brunch connoisseur shows a newbie around.  You may think of eggs Benedict and mimosas when it comes to brunch — but what about shrimp dumplings and tea? MPR News reporters Nicole Ki and Kyra Miles went out to find the best dim sum in town.

🧑‍⚖️ Hunter Biden to go on trial on gun charges. President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden goes on trial this week on federal gun charges for allegedly lying about his illegal drug use when he bought a Colt revolver in the fall of 2018.

🚒 Fire scorches thousands of acres east of San Francisco, prompting evacuations. A wind-driven fire continued to scorch thousands of acres 60 miles east of San Francisco, prompting residents to flee their homes and the closure of two major freeways near the central California city of Tracy.
