🎪 For two decades, the Minnesota State Fair has chosen a local artist to create a work of art to represent the Great Minnesota Get-Together. The fair would sell posters and limited edition prints of the artworks each year, and the original artwork would go on view at the Fine Art Exhibition. That program is no more. MPR News arts reporter Alex V. Cipolle explains what happened.

Minneapolis resolution passes, school focused on Native cultural education to get new home

A Minneapolis elementary school dedicated to American Indian cultural education is on track to move into its own building for the first time since the school opened almost a decade and a half ago.

For the past 14 years, the school has shared a building with Anne Sullivan Middle School. Students' families and school leaders are also asking the district for dedicated busing.

“This is going to be an incredible vision, not only in our district and in our state, but also in the nation,” said Adriana Cerrillo, who helped to craft the resolution as a part of her role as the board’s liaison to the American Indian community.
 
From Verona to Nogales with a Latino adaptation of ‘Romeo and Juliet’

Called “Romeo and Juliet: Love in a Time of Hate,” the show has been rewritten to include characters speaking Spanish and performing spoken word poetry.

The new play adds elements to Shakespeare’s tragedy, including examining the treatment of the working class and the range of ideologies within Latino communities.

🚨 Man fatally shot by police in south Minneapolis. A man who reportedly was seen waving a handgun was fatally shot by police on Wednesday night. Officers reportedly chased a man on foot and there was a confrontation as officers ordered the man to drop the gun. The man later died at a hospital.

🎓 Scholar says he still wants U Holocaust center job despite controversy. Raz Segal told MPR News that he stands by his October article and its key argument that Israel’s siege of Gaza constitutes the systematic destruction of Palestinians and their society in violation of international law. Some U of M professors have resigned from the center’s board in protest of Segal’s selection.

🍄 Appetites: The best way to find and cook wild mushrooms.  You can pick up all kinds of wild mushrooms at your nearest farmers market, said Appetites regular Beth Dooley, author of “The Perennial Kitchen.” And she’s got plenty of tips for how to cook them, too.

📷 Listen: This Pride month, photographers launch new studio focused on LGBTQ+ clients. “Queer Family Portraits” aims to helps people in the LGBTQ+ community feel comfortable in front of the camera.

⚾ Twins clobber Rockies 17-9 with season-high 24 hits. Willi Castro and Royce Lewis homered and Carlos Correa had a career-best five hits. Minnesota opens a four-game series against Oakland Thursday night.
