Flooded Minnesota communities begin transition from fight to recovery

The torrential rain is done, but the water is still rising in some Minnesota communities. The focus is starting to switch to flood recovery, but public safety officials stress there is still a need for vigilance — and for volunteers.
 
Minneapolis hosts USA Gymnastics Olympic trials

Minneapolis will be the center of the USA Gymnastics' universe this week. The country’s best gymnasts will be competing at Target Center, vying for a spot on Team USA's men’s and women’s Olympic gymnastics teams.

Among the competitors are two Minnesota-born gymnasts — St. Paul native Suni Lee, who was one of the stars of the last Olympic games, and Shane Wiskus of Spring Lake.
 
What else we're watching:

🪖 Gov. Walz calls in National Guard as southern Minnesota hit with high water, evacuations. Flooding in southern Minnesota has prompted Gov. Tim Walz to declare a peacetime emergency. The order  allows Walz to call up the Minnesota National Guard to help cities and counties affected by inundated infrastructure.

🌊 Flooding forces people from homes in some parts of Iowa. Sirens blared at 2 a.m. in Rock Valley, Iowa, population 4,200, where people in hundreds of homes were told to get out as the Rock River could no longer take rain that has slammed the region.

🏳️‍🌈 ‘It needed to happen’: Grand Rapids hosts its very first LGBTQ+ Pride festival. Hundreds of people flocked to Old Central School in downtown Grand Rapids for Itasca Pride. While there have been pride events in Itasca County, Grand Rapids has refrained in the past, even though those at the event said allyship in the community is strong.

🌉 St. Paul’s Kellogg Boulevard bridge construction begins later this summer. St. Paul will demolish and rebuild the Kellogg Boulevard and Third Street bridge. The three-year, $70 million construction project will accommodate more traffic, including transit, walking and biking.

🚓 Man shot by Brooklyn Park police at investigation scene of baby’s death. Brooklyn Park police officers shot an adult man with a gun Sunday morning, almost an hour after treating an infant that was not breathing at the same location.
