🏛️ Congress is racing to get to the bottom of the security failures that led to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a rally. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden has contracted COVID-19 and is forced to press pause on campaign events.

🚓 The Minneapolis City Council will decide Thursday morning whether to approve a new contract for the Minneapolis police union. If it rubberstamps the proposal, Minneapolis officers would be among the highest paid in the state, but critics want to negotiate departmental reform in exchange for the higher cost. Reporter Jon Collins breaks down the concerns.

🐤 And MPR News Meteorologist Sven Sundgaard takes us to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center to check on a young patient he brought in several weeks ago. The center's executive director says they're seeing more intakes than ever.

Minnesota Republicans wrap convention sensing wind behind Trump as Democrats struggle

The Republican National Convention centered in Milwaukee offered the party an opportunity to coalesce around nominee and former President Donald Trump days after he survived an assassination attempt. Democrats remain torn over their path ahead.

Minnesota delegates say as the convention closes out, they’re buoyed by the growing enthusiasm for the former president. But they also know they can’t let their foot off the gas.

 
FAFSA completion rates still down in Minnesota, though things are improving

Fewer higher school seniors completed the popular application for financial aid after the delayed release of the form and several technical glitches earlier this year.

Now, two Minnesota organizations are offering one-on-one support to help students pay for college.
 
What else we're watching:

👮🏼 Minneapolis police contract vote nears; includes large wage increases and department changes. After months of controversy, the Minneapolis police contract proposal with a large wage increase may cross a major hurdle Thursday morning with an expected vote before the Minneapolis City Council.

😷 Biden contracts COVID-19 on the campaign trail. Biden is taking Paxlovid, the White House said. His symptoms are mild, but he will return to Delaware to self-isolate. He is expected to continue to carry out his duties while he is isolating.

🗣️ California Rep. Adam Schiff calls for Biden to step aside. Schiff, who is currently running for Senate in California, called on Biden to “pass the torch” and “secure his legacy of leadership” by allowing Democrats to defeat Donald Trump. Schiff is the highest-profile Democrat to call for Biden to drop out.

🚨 Vandals target Islamic center site 8 times in 6 weeks. Security camera images released Wednesday by the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations show a group of boys breaking into the Tibyan Center in St. Anthony, which is set to open later this year in a former bank building.

🏀 Natisha Hiedeman scores 16 of a season-high 18 in the fourth quarter and the Lynx beat the Dream. Minnesota outscored the Dream 30-19 in the final 10 minutes for its highest scoring fourth quarter of the season.
