🐄 The Miracle of Birth Center at the Minnesota State Fair will have fewer miracles this year. Birthing or nursing cows and newborn calves aren't invited. It's because of concerns about bird flu spreading to mammals, including dairy cattle. Lukas Sjostrom, executive director of the Minnesota Milk Producers Association, shares his perspective on the fair restrictions and spread of avian influenza.

If roughly 40 percent of Americans avoid the news, what does that mean for political engagement?

About 40 percent of Americans avoid the news at least some of the time, and the reasons for doing so are complicated. As one expert points out, some news avoiders are put off by scary headlines and others have a hard time making sense of the news, especially when it comes to politics.

University of Minnesota Journalism Professor Benjamin Toff has been looking into this issue and is coauthor of “Avoiding the News: Reluctant Audiences for Journalism.”
 
988 becomes Minnesota’s go-to call for mental health help

Now starting its third year, the 988 call line has turned into a lifeline for tens of thousands of Minnesotans. Advocates say it’s been a success helping people with all kinds of health needs, although challenges remain to make the system better.

The 988 system was designed to improve outreach to the pre-existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, a 1-800 number that was tough to remember in crisis situations. Advocates say it’s been a success here and around the country, although challenges remain.

⛺ Duluth City Council takes 'criminal penalty' out of homelessness ordinance. After a marathon meeting Monday night that stretched nearly seven hours, the council opted to make camping on city property an “ordinance violation” with a maximum fine of $200, rather than a misdemeanor crime that could have resulted in jail time.

🏛️ Aitkin County prosecutors oppose release of man serving life sentence for 1998 murder.  The Aitkin County Attorney’s Office is opposing the release of a man serving a life sentence for a 1998 murder who alleges that he was wrongfully convicted. The Minnesota Attorney General’s conviction review unit recommended in June that Brian Pippitt be exonerated.

🤸🏾‍♂️ U.S. men’s gymnastics team breaks 16-year Olympic drought with a team bronze.  It has been a long journey back to the podium for the U.S. men’s gymnastics. To be competitive on the international stage has required a sea change in the way the men’s team designed their routines, which are scored for both the difficulty of what was attempted and the gymnast’s execution.

🐮 Birthing cows and newborn calves will be absent from the Minnesota State Fair. The Minnesota State Fair will not have birthing cows or newborn calves at the Miracle of Birth Center due to the spread of avian flu.

🚨 Emergency responders use drone to rescue man from drowning in Sauk Lake. Around 2:26 a.m., a caller said the man swam toward the middle of the lake where he appeared to struggle, and by the time the Sauk Centre Police arrived, officers couldn’t see the man from the shore. They then launched a drone.

⛹🏾‍♀️ U.S. women’s basketball team opens the Olympics with dominant win over Japan. The team, which now boasts a 56-game Olympic winning streak, easily defeated Japan 102-76. A’ja Wilson led the way for Team USA with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Breanna Stewart added 22 points and eight rebounds
