🌩️ We’re on severe storm watch Wednesday across Minnesota. NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center lays out a large slight risk (level 2 of 5) for much of Minnesota Wednesday. The highest potential for storms with destructive winds is in southwest Minnesota.

🪖 Tensions are ramping up in the Middle East. Hamas said Wednesday morning its top leader was killed in an attack in Tehran. At the same time, Israel's war on Hamas in Gaza continues. NPR's Steve Inskeep speaks with veteran regional correspondents Jane Arraf in Beirut and Daniel Estrin in Tel Aviv about the assassination's ramifications for the U.S., the Middle East and beyond.

🏫 The U.S. Department of the Interior has issued its  final report in an investigation into the legacies of federal Indian boarding schools. For generations, the federal government actively sought to erase Native American languages and culture. Now, a government report recommends spending billions to try to walk back some of the harm done. 

📐 An Indigenous design camp for teenagers started this week in Minneapolis and it's the first of its kind in the U.S. The goal is to educate campers about career options in architecture — a field where Native Americans are underrepresented.

🏕️ Every year, thousands of people visit the Boundary Waters and other remote, wild areas of northern Minnesota. And every year lots of people run into trouble and call for help. Those who respond are often nurses, police officers and other volunteers who sometimes spend several days on missions. MPR News guest host Dan Kraker talks with two volunteer responders who describe what goes into those missions.

‘Adrenaline rush for all of us’: Suni Lee’s family, friends celebrate Team USA gold medal win

St. Paul’s Sunisa Lee and the rest of the U.S. women’s gymnastics team won gold in the team artistic gymnastics competition in Paris. As when Lee won her first gold in 2021, her extended family, friends and supporters gathered in Minnesota to watch her compete.

The star gymnast has dealt with kidney issues that almost kept her out of this year’s Olympics and threw her future in the sport into question. But her health improved, and earlier this year she made a comeback.
 
Four-time Paralympian Chuck Aoki strives to make athletes with disabilities more visible

Minneapolis-native Chuck Aoki will be heading to Paris next month for the Paralympics to compete in wheelchair rugby. He will be the first Team USA Paralympian to compete in four Paralympic games.

"I grew up with a disability, but I was a really active kid. I wanted to play sports," he said. "But when it turned out I was going to have to use a wheelchair full time, my parents were sort of like, you’re still going to be active, we’re still going to find ways for you to do it."

🛣️ County Road 9 bridge closed indefinitely, Blue Earth County discusses possible replacement project. The County Road 9 bridge will stay closed indefinitely as county officials deemed it irreparable after last month’s flooding at the Rapidan Dam caused serious damage to the supports.

🚫 Minnesota attorney general seeks to restore state ban on people under 21 carrying guns. Keith Ellison asked a federal appeals court on Tuesday to consider restoring a state law that bans people ages 18 to 20 from getting permits to carry guns in public.

📚 Listen: Twin Cities author releases children’s books celebrating Haitian language and music. Djenane Saint Juste is the author of the book and founder of the organization Afoutayi. She joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to talk about her work sharing Haitian culture through language, drumming and dance.

🍎 Two new grocery stores opening in Minneapolis, one of them in former Aldi storefront.
The south Minneapolis store will open in September in the Hi-Lake Shopping Center. The northside market will open in December in the space left behind by Aldi. When the store closed, residents were left with fewer grocery options.

🏉 The U.S. women’s rugby sevens team achieves a first — an Olympic medal. The U.S. women are bringing home the country’s first medal in rugby sevens. In a dramatic finish, the U.S. defeated Australia, 14-12 to win the bronze medal.

⚽ The U.S. men’s soccer team advances to the quarterfinals at the Paris Olympics.
The U.S. men’s team defeated Guinea 3-0 to advance to the knockout round in an Olympics for the first time since the Sydney Games in 2000. The Americans will face Morocco Friday in the quarterfinals.
