Coming up on Morning Edition

🗳️ Tuesday is Primary Day in Minnesota. Voters will determine which candidates earn a spot on the November ballot. There are partisan contests for the U.S. Senate and House races, as well as several primary battles in the Minnesota Legislature. MPR News political reporter Dana Ferguson gives us a look at a competitive race in southeastern Minnesota where the political future of the longest-serving Republican member of the House is on the line.

🍺 The window for Minnesota's first marijuana business license applications closes tonight. Hemp-based THC drinks have filled the gap while the legalized recreational marijuana industry gets up and running. MPR News producer Gracie Stockton introduces us to an entrepreneur who's hoping to bring his niche beverage to new heights in the expanding cannabis economy.

🗒️ How can journalists reinvent the way they do their jobs, in an era of cutbacks and decline? MPR News host Angela Davis recently moderated two panels about the state of local news in Minnesota. The first is with funders who are pushing for new models to reinvigorate newsrooms across the state and the country. The second brings the conversation to news leaders across Minnesota.

📰On Monday, hear the first panel with funders and philanthropy leaders who are heading the charge to champion and reimagine local news. National and local leaders discuss why they believe journalism is essential for a functioning democracy, how business models could be changed to make newsrooms sustainable and how the unique challenges news faces in rural communities can be addressed.
 
Local groups mobilize to support immigrant access to the polls

Minnesota’s primary election is Tuesday and voting has already started. Voters will choose candidates for the November general election in various races, including the U.S. Senate, U.S. House, state legislative seats and nonpartisan local positions.

Some local organizations are working to ensure voters in Latino, Somali, African diaspora and Hmong communities have the information and support they need to register to vote in the upcoming primary election.
 
Summer Olympics recap: Team USA’s Minnesota star athletes bring home 12 medals

After two weeks of nail-biting competitions, the Olympic Games 2024 are over. Minnesota athletes gave outstanding performances in various disciplines, bringing home 12 medals including golds from gymnastics, basketball and swimming events.
 
Abrupt Rainbow Health closure sparks a scramble to fill gaps in care

State and local agencies, former managers and other organizations are hurrying to reconnect clients to help after the sudden shutdown of Rainbow Health, a Twin Cities HIV and LGBTQ+ services clinic.

“It’s gonna take a village... It’ll be ongoing, working with the community and organizations and government funders to kind of figure out the long term solution and plan.”

🤸🏽‍♀️ Fans and dignitaries celebrate Olympian Suni Lee’s return home to Twin Cities.  A crowd of around 70 people greeted Olympic gold medalist and St. Paul gymnast Suni Lee Sunday at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport as she returned home from the Paris Olympics.

🥇 Final Olympic medal tally puts U.S. on top in Paris. The fight for national bragging rights over gold medals — considered by many countries to be the most coveted prize — came down to the wire and in the end China and the U.S. tied with forty apiece.

🍲 Your guide to dietary restriction-friendly food at the Minnesota State Fair. The Minnesota State Fair is just around the corner and the food is all the rage. 📣 Harris pledges to work to end taxes on tips for service industry employees, echoing Trump vowVice President Kamala Harris is promising to work to eliminate federal taxes on tips paid to restaurant and other service industry employees. That echoes a similar pledge by her opponent, Republican Donald Trump,  and marks a rare moment of political overlap between them.
