Primary election results: Reps. Ilhan Omar, Michelle Fischbach survive primary challenges

U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar survived a DFL primary rematch Tuesday from former Minneapolis City Council member Don Samuels.

Former professional basketball player Royce White — the endorsed Republican candidate — beat Joe Fraser to go to the general election contest against U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar.

And Republican U.S. Rep. Michelle Fischbach also advanced in her GOP primary Tuesday night, overcoming a challenge from Steve Boyd after the party opted not to endorse in the contest.
 
Unchecked development, lax regulation push Minnesota lakeshores to the edge

Development has destroyed nearly half the natural shorelines that help protect Minnesota lakes from erosion and pollution. Reversing that means convincing people that their vision of beauty is killing the thing they love.

“We are a land of 10,000 lakes,” said Paul Radomski, a longtime lake ecologist with the DNR. “We don't want to be a land of 10,000 impaired lakes.”
 
In the Twin Cities, mapping the warming urban heat island to prepare for an even hotter future

This summer, volunteers collected detailed temperature and humidity data across Hennepin and Ramsey counties. It's part of an effort to map the urban heat island in the Twin Cities to help plan for climate change-fueled extreme heat.

🗳️ Wisconsin voters reject GOP-written ballot measures, U.S. Senate race set with Eric Hovde's primary win. He will take on Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin, who ran unopposed in her party’s primary as she seeks a third term. The race is a key target for both sides as Democrats try to hold onto their majority in the Senate.

🚓 Rochester Police seek help identifying vandals behind racist graffiti at state representative’s home.  Police shared suspect photos on Facebook, which Rep. Kim Hicks confirmed were captured on her security camera. The FBI is helping investigate the vandalism which caused thousands of dollars of property damage.

👮🏻 When police say ‘stand back,’ these states say how far. Some states have passed minimum distance rules for when first responders warn the public to stay back. Journalism organizations say it’s really about discouraging bystander video.

⛹🏾‍♀️ WNBA star Dearica Hamby sues the league and her former team for discrimination.
The suit accuses the Las Vegas Aces of trading Hamby because she was pregnant and retaliating against her for speaking out. Her lawyers say the WNBA’s response amounted to a “light tap on the wrist.”

🚨 Police investigating Blaine shooting deaths.
Police are investigating two deaths in Blaine following reports of a shooting just before 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

Twins clobber Royals 13-3 to win crisp debut by fast-rising starting pitcher Zebby Matthews. Minnesota kept pace with AL Central leader Cleveland, still trailing by 3½ games. Kansas City fell six games back. The Twins (67-52) and Royals (65-55) control the second and third wild-card spots.
