| Coming up on Morning Edition | The Republican and Democratic National Conventions are now both over, and it's been a whirlwind six weeks of politics. There was an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump two days before the RNC. Amid intra- and inter-party and public pressure, and mounting criticism of the United States' handling of the Israel-Hamas war, President Joe Biden withdrew his bid for reelection. He endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, who then in a crunch time search chose Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate. All these twists and turns are making for an unprecedented presidential election, which could have unforeseen down-ballot effects. Republican Rep. Pete Stauber, who represents Minnesota's 8th Congressional District, joins host Cathy Wurzer with his reactions to the DNC and political headwinds for the Republican Party. |

| | Kamala Harris at DNC summons Americans to reject divisions and defeat threat of Trump's candidacy | Vice President Kamala Harris called on Americans to join her to “chart a new way forward” as she accepted the Democratic nomination on Thursday, arguing her personal story and prosecutorial background made her uniquely qualified to protect their interests and beat Republican Donald Trump. Harris' address in Chicago caps a whirlwind eight weeks in American politics and manifests the stunning reversal of Democratic fortunes just 75 days until Election Day. Party leaders who had publicly despaired over President Joe Biden's candidacy after his disastrous debate against Trump, were jubilant both at the historic nature of Harris' candidacy and their buoyed hopes for this November. | |

| | 75 years later Salem Dining Hall continues to be a family affair, iconic stop for fairgoers | Salem Lutheran Church Dining Hall has maintained a significant presence at the Minnesota State Fair for 75 years, drawing on a deep-rooted community of volunteers and evolving to meet the changing tastes of fairgoers. “Every year, by the grace of God, we wind up figuring out some way to get the shifts covered and every job done. So as long as we can keep on doing that, we’ll be here,” manager Steve Johnson said. “We’ve changed and adapted as the fair clientele has changed. This is one of the few places where you can actually sit down.” | |
