| Coming upon Morning Edition | 🚨 On Monday afternoon, a Minneapolis council committee is expected to discuss increasing the city's contract with SoundThinking, which operates a gunshot location system known as ShotSpotter. The police department considers it an invaluable tool to respond quickly to possible scenes of violence and that it should be expanded to neighborhoods that have seen an uptick in gun deaths. But critics want more proof it does what the police department says it does. 🎓 Colleges and students rely on resident assistants to bridge the gap for resources and support during a changing time of young people’s lives. But what used to be a relatively simple job — run the front desk, shoo away occasional loiterers and tell dorm dwellers to turn down the music — became much more complicated in the COVID years. Now, more young people are coming to college with more mental health needs and issues. RAs are often on the front lines of these challenges, but most aren't equipped to take on these intense demands. |

| | Lower Sioux Indian Community opens new plant to construct homes with 'hempcrete' | The Lower Sioux Indian Community has opened a new facility to turn hemp into a home insulation material known as “hempcrete.” The tribe hopes to build an industry with the help of a wider group of farmers and address a housing shortage for its citizens. Hempcrete is made from the woody core of hemp — called hurd — lime and water. It’s material that former tribal council member Earl Pendleton has researched for several years to provide “safer and healthier” homes to members of the tribal community.

| | Council members to examine strengthening Minneapolis ties to ShotSpotter technology | Minneapolis’s contract for gunfire detection technology — most commonly referred to as ShotSpotter — is up for a council committee discussion Monday, as some are asking if city taxpayers should pay more for it. Since 2007, the city has contracted with the company now known as SoundThinking Inc., to provide a system of acoustic detectors that alert law enforcement of potential gunfire. In recent years, several cities have opted out, citing a lack of proof the technology makes cities safer — including Chicago, where the technology will be decommissioned later this month. Minneapolis is the only city in Minnesota with a ShotSpotter contract and the city may keep it longer.
