Camp Ripley to test nearby residents’ water for 'forever chemicals'

Officials at Camp Ripley in central Minnesota are testing the drinking water of some residents who live outside the camp’s borders for so-called “forever chemicals.”

The camp has been testing its own water for the past several years for PFAS, found in firefighting foam that was used for testing and training at the military training facility until 2017.
 
But this marks the first time officials have expanded testing for the chemicals beyond the camp’s boundaries, as the U.S Department of Defense deals with a massive PFAS contamination problem at military bases across the U.S.
 
What else we're watching:
Study finds widely used insecticide has little effect on Monarch butterflies. A widely used class of insecticides is known to harm both native bees and honeybees. But a new University of Minnesota study finds the neonicotinoid insecticides have little effect on adult Monarch butterflies. 

'His Name is George Floyd' wins Pulitzer Prize for best nonfiction. "We were trying to figure out ways to get people to understand systemic racism. And we had an editor who suggested maybe George Floyd is the person who could help illustrate how these systems operate."

Here are all the winners of the 2023 Pulitzer Prizes. For more than 100 years, the Pulitzer Prizes have been awarded by Columbia University to honor American achievements in journalism, letters and drama, and music.

Killing of deputy leaves western Wisconsin with a familiar feeling of grief. Last month, two police officers were fatally shot during a traffic stop in Barron County, Wis. And in Minnesota, a Pope County sheriff's deputy was fatally shot while responding to a domestic violence call on April 15.

Former Hormel CEO Ettinger tops other finalists for interim U of M president job. Ettinger is expected lead the U of M on a temporary basis while the Board of Regents searches for a new permanent president. The board sought candidates for interim president who would not seek the position permanently.

The COVID public health emergency ends this week. After more than three years of social disruption, at least 6 million hospitalizations, and 1.1 million U.S. deaths, the public health emergency declared Jan. 31, 2020, is set to expire Thursday.
