Minnesota lawmakers are expected to put together the final pieces of the $72 billion state budget this week and approve a variety of new policies.
Democrats who hold the trifecta of control at the Capitol – the House of Representatives, Senate and governor’s office – have said the package includes pieces that have popular support and that have for years been held up under divided control of state government.
But business groups, health care organizations and Republicans have pushed back, saying they’ve had little input in shaping the budget and could face higher costs and more state mandates should it pass. | |

Torrential rain led to flooding in parts of southern Minnesota on Saturday evening, and may have triggered a mudslide that closed a state highway early Sunday. The Minnesota Department of Transportation reported at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday that State Highway 68 was closed south of Courtland due to a “sizeable mudslide” across the driving lanes.
DFL chair promises changes after Minneapolis convention fight. Minnesota DFL Party Chair Ken Martin is calling for an emergency meeting of the party’s state executive committee after a fight at a nominating convention for city council candidates in Minneapolis on Saturday. A video posted to Twitter by the Wedge Live account shows a heated scene between supporters of challenger Nasri Warsame and incumbent Ward 10 City Council Member Aisha Chughtai.
Wave of anti-transgender bills in Republican-led states divides U.S. faith leaders. As Republican-governed states across the nation advance myriad bills targeting transgender young people, America’s faith leaders are starkly divided in their assessment. Some view the legislation as reflecting God’s will; others voice outrage that Christianity is being invoked to justify laws they view as cruel and hateful.
The Supreme Court outlawed split juries, but hundreds of people remain in prison anyway. In 2020, the Supreme Court struck down laws that allowed people in Louisiana and Oregon to be convicted even if two jurors voted not guilty. Despite the ruling, some of them may never get a new trial.
Larnach, Gallo help Twins' offense keep rolling in 16-3 win over Cubs. Trevor Larnach hit a three-run homer, Joey Gallo homered for the second straight game and Louie Varland pitched 6 1/3 solid innings for the Minnesota Twins in a 16-3 win against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.
