Minnesota House passes $2.2 billion in new school funding, next stop Senate

Lawmakers in the Minnesota House voted to increase the amount the state contributes to the general education formula, plus new money for libraries, school support staff, menstrual products in school restrooms and changes in reading instruction.  

“With this proposal we make historic investments in our schools. We ensure that the learning environments in our communities work for all of our students and that our teachers, principals and administrators have the tools they need to meet students where they’re at,” said Rep. Cheryl Youakim, DFL-Hopkins, who chairs the House Education Finance Committee.
 
What else we're watching:
Paid sick and safe time close to passing at Minnesota Capitol. “This bill is a big damn deal,” Sen. Erin Murphy, DFL-Saint Paul, said. “We are making powerful advances for people who work for a living all across the state of Minnesota in a variety of industries, providing worker safety, but as important, worker power and worker voice.”

Minnesota-based company will pay $487m to settle kickback, fraud case. A federal judge in St. Paul has ordered a medical products company and its owner to pay $487 million to settle allegations that it defrauded Medicare.

Minneapolis band Dilly Dally Alley on holding audience's dreams, fears and wishes. You can catch their album release show at the Turf Club in St. Paul on Wednesday at 7 p.m. You can also find their music and other upcoming performances at dillydallyalleyband.com.

Walz signs $240 million lead pipe removal bill. The bill also contains funding for cities to identify where these contaminated pipes are, and that they will get in touch with homeowners who need to have their systems replaced. 

Author Brian Selznick explores nature's point of view in the 500 pages of "Big Tree." Selznick wrote a story about two tiny sycamore seeds named Louise and Merwyn. They begin life in a seed ball growing on their mother, a gigantic and wise tree standing tall in the mists of prehistory.
