Independent bookstores on the rise in Minnesota, each with a story of their own

Across Minnesota and the nation, new and more diverse independent bookstores have been popping up. In fact, for every independent bookstore that has closed since 2020, more than three new ones have opened, according to the American Booksellers Association. Here are 15 to look out for in Minnesota.

HyLife Windom plant to close Friday: 1,000 workers will lose jobs. HyLife filed for bankruptcy protection in April and since then more than 1,000 employees have been unsure about the plant’s future.

Metro Transit police chief promises safety improvements. The number of people riding buses and trains continues to slowly tick upward after a steep drop at the start of the pandemic. But reports of vandalism, drug use, and assaults are up sharply.

Rainbow Scandinavia: Duluth artist Kirsten Aune puts a kaleidoscopic spin on textile folk art. “It was a weird town, but there were some great artists here and there and I couldn't believe that,” Aune says of moving to Duluth and finding creatives from all over the country had relocated there as well.

State regulators approve 9 percent electric rate increase for Xcel Energy. Initial estimates indicate Xcel's final rates will be lower than the interim rates it's currently charging, meaning most customers will receive a refund. 

New law seeks to stem rising costs of disability claims while also providing PTSD treatment. Almost 800 police officers around the state have filed duty disability claims for PTSD since 2019. Many of these officers, said Rep. Kaohly Vang Her, DFL-St. Paul, were leaving their departments with this serious diagnosis without receiving medical treatment.  

Former lawmaker Roger Moe honored by University of Minnesota Crookston. He remained in the legislature for 32 years, including 22 years as Senate Majority Leader and he ran an unsuccessful campaign for Governor in 2002.
