Attorney General Garland to reveal investigation into the Minneapolis Police Department

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland is scheduled to be in Minneapolis Friday to announce the results of an extensive investigation into the city's police department — particularly officers’ use of force. The probe is widely expected to result in long-term federal court oversight of the MPD.

In April of 2021, the day after a Hennepin County jury convicted former police officer Derek Chauvin of murdering George Floyd, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced that the Justice Department would take a close look at the Minneapolis Police Department’s policies, training, supervision and its use of force.

 
ChangeMakers: ‘Improv evangelist’ Jada Pulley makes space for LGBTQ+ performers

Jada Pulley, 28, is a nonbinary improv performer and theater artist, cofounder of the Queer and Funny Improv Festival, and a house manager for HUGE Improv Theater in Minneapolis.

"I want my community to be happy, healthy and thriving," they said. "I want my Black community, my queer community, my improv community, my personal social community, my cat [laughs] — I want us all to just thrive together with the emphasis on together. If we're a community, I want us to act like a community. To have each other's backs and be able to support each other in different ways in the good times, and the bad times, and be goofy together, be able to be our full selves together."

What else we're watching:
Thousands of Minnesota students compete in Alexandria for target shooting as sport gains popularity. Clay target shooting is a rapidly growing high school sport in Minnesota. Thousands of Minnesota high school students are in Alexandria this week for what organizers say is the largest clay target shooting competition in the country. 

Wildfire prompts temporary closure of part of the Boundary Waters. The closure order goes into effect at 12:01 a.m. Friday and affects nearly 50 lakes — including portages and about 80 campsites — as well as a portion of the Kekekabic Trail.

Survey: Americans split on whether schools should teach ongoing effects of slavery, racism. The McCourtney Institute for Democracy’s latest Mood of the Nation Poll, conducted with 1,000 American adults May 12-18, finds that nine in 10 American adults think schools have a responsibility to teach children about slavery, but only half think those lessons should extend to “the ongoing effects of slavery and racism in the United States.”

Abortion care training is banned in some states. A new bill could help OB-GYNs get it. Medical schools in states that have banned abortion can't teach abortion care. Sen. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin wants to make funds available for students in those states to travel for the training.

Changemaker Rox Anderson on creating safe spaces for LGBTQ+ health. MPR News reporter Feven Gerezgiher speaks with Rox Anderson, director of the Minnesota Transgender Health Coalition.
