Minneapolis honors 'the fight for freedom' during Juneteenth celebrations

Juneteenth celebrations are in full swing across the Twin Cities, having kicked off on Friday with events scheduled through Monday, the actual holiday honoring the date enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas finally learned slavery had ended two years prior.

Events across the state are joining in the national Juneteenth theme of “Wave of Freedom.”

This year marks its first as a state holiday in Minnesota.
 
Attendees: Hudson's first Pride signals community progress, despite protesters

A celebration of the St. Croix Valley's queer community drew about 1,000 people to Hudson, Wis.’s Lakefront Park. Event attendees said it was an exciting indication of progress, despite the presence of protesters. The Valley Wide Pride event Saturday was the first of its kind in Hudson.

Matthew Darnold, founder and president of Hudson Pride Co., the nonprofit that organized the event, said the event felt healing for many members of the LGBTQ+ community like him. He said the area has traditionally lacked spaces where queer people could feel fully comfortable being themselves.
 
What else we're watching:
5 friends dead in crash at I-35W and Lake Street in Minneapolis. Minneapolis police said the victims were all in a vehicle that was hit. An initial account from police said a suspect vehicle had been “observed” by a state trooper on the freeway , but said the crash happened before that trooper attempted a traffic stop.

'The only race of its kind': Women pilots take flight in historic competition. The race is about winning prizes, but it’s also about networking among women pilots and expanding the roster of women in aviation.

Families enjoy dancing, arts and crafts at kick-off for Twin Cities Pride. Twin Cities Pride events officially kicked off at St. Paul’s Como Park on Sunday with the 30th annual “Family Fun Day” for LGBTQ+ Minnesotan youth and their families.

Boundary Waters wildfire may have been human caused. Fire investigators have determined that the wildfire in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area that started on Tuesday may have been started by a human cause.

Biden says rich must 'pay their share' at first reelection campaign rally. President Joe Biden delivered an unapologetically economic populist message during the first rally of his reelection campaign, saying his policies had created jobs and lifted the middle class.

Drought affects Minnesota strawberry growers; fewer pick-your-own options this summer.Dry conditions have contributed to a poor yield for many farmers. Strawberry plants require an average of one to two inches of water per week to thrive. But some parts of Minnesota have seen less than a tenth of an inch of rain this month.

Judge gives Enbridge 3 years to close oil pipeline on tribal land in Wisconsin. A federal judge has given Enbridge three years to shut down a section of an oil and gas pipeline that crosses reservation land. The judge also ordered the energy company to pay a Native American tribe more than $5 million for trespassing.

'Hike your own hike': 250 miles in 19 days on the Superior Hiking Trail. Minneapolis resident Kate Bechtold just finished a 250-mile hike in 19 days on the Superior Hiking Trail on June 9. MPR News asked her about her experience and what she would recommend to those who want to explore nature through hiking at any distance.
