Families of fatal crash victims call for independent investigation

The families of five young women killed June 16 in a high-speed crash on Lake Street joined Twin Cities Muslim leaders Monday in calling for an independent investigation into the incident.

Jaylani Hussein, the executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), said the community deserves to know more about what led up to the crash, including whether there was a police pursuit, how traffic camera video of the crash made it onto social media and whether the state followed the proper procedures in reinstating the driver’s license of the suspect.
 
Nonprofit fills invisible need for disadvantaged kids in Minnesota: new underwear

Undies for Everyone wants help keep kids in school who might otherwise stay home because they are embarrassed about not having what they need.

“It's just one more barrier,” said Heidi Geiss, a liaison for unsheltered students at Anoka-Hennepin schools, Minnesota’s largest district. She believes the free underwear program can improve student attendance. “It feels good from the inside all the way out when you know you're put together and ready to go into the classroom.”

Tony Bouza — outspoken, contrarian cop who once ran Minneapolis police — dies at 94. After joining the New York Police Department in the 1950s, he rose through the ranks and became a maverick reformer, grew frustrated and took a mid-career turn to Minneapolis, where he was the first prominent outsider to helm the department and challenge the long-standing power of the city’s police establishment and labor union.

Minnesota, Wisconsin dairy farmers face oversaturated market, temporarily cut-off sewer service. Dairy farmers around the region are facing an oversaturated market. It’s been made worse for some farmers in the region when the Metropolitan Council temporarily cut off sewer service to the Hastings Creamery, after the company was notified of six violations of industrial waste permits including a recent leak of milk into the city’s sewer system.

Taylor Swift leaves fans in a state of grace at 'intimate' Minnesota shows. Are the Swifities right? Star Tribune music critic Jon Bream thinks so. He joined All Things Considered on Monday with guest host Catharine Richert to discuss Minnesota's Taylor Swift takeover.

Investigation continues into fire that destroyed popular gathering place on Minnesota's North Shore. The cause of the fire that leveled Papa Charlie’s, a popular restaurant, bar and concert venue, remains under investigation. There were no reports of injuries.
