Colder air will continue to blow into the state Thursday, but the fierce winds will have abated. Highs will be from the teens to low 20s. The Twin Cities should have a high around 19. Get the latest on Updraft.

Two gun proposals are moving at the Minnesota Capitol

On Thursday supporters of new gun laws will rally at the Minnesota Capitol, lobbying members of the Legislature to pass measures they say will reduce gun violence.

They have new hope this year that two laws will actually pass: one to expand criminal background checks to all firearms purchases and another that would allow authorities to temporarily confiscate guns from people found to be dangerous to themselves and others.

 
What else we're watching:
Minneapolis City Council eyeing next step toward funding sidewalk clearing. The proposal could go into effect as early as 2024 and include the entire 2,000-mile city sidewalk network by 2027.

1 killed, 3 hurt in shooting at El Paso, Texas shopping mall. The shooting happened in a busy shopping area and across a large parking lot from a Walmart where 23 people were killed in a racist attack targeting Hispanic people in 2019.

Frey: Affordable rental housing in Minneapolis surged last year. The number of affordable rental housing units created in Minneapolis last year was about three times higher than the yearly average for most of the last decade.

Istanbul's mayor warns 90,000 buildings are at risk if a major earthquake strikes. The mayor of Istanbul is warning that some 90,000 buildings could be at risk of collapsing if a major earthquake strikes Turkey's largest city. The warning comes as the death toll from last week's quake in Turkey and northern Syria now exceeds 40,000.

Art Hounds: Art storefronts in Ely, Robert DesJarlait's paintings and Nora Montañez Patterson's new play. The Ely ArtWalk transforms the northern Minnesota town’s storefronts into spaces for local art through February. Nora Montañez Patterson’s play “Code You” from Exposed Brick Theatre turns the pandemic on its head. Robert DesJarlait’s watercolors describe Ojibwe stories, culture and dance at the East Central Regional Arts Council Gallery in Hinckley.
