Bill to extend benefits for laid-off mineworkers passes Minnesota House

A bill to extend unemployment benefits for more than 400 laid-off mineworkers on the Iron Range is headed to DFL Gov. Tim Walz for his expected signature after it passed the Minnesota House Monday by a vote of 127-7.

The bill extends benefits for an additional 26 weeks for workers who were laid off in May from Northshore Mining, which operates an open pit taconite mine in Babbitt and a processing plant in Silver Bay along the North Shore of Lake Superior.
 
What else we're watching:
As Sanford, Fairview look to push merger forward, questions about UMN’s role remain. Since the proposed merger was announced, the question of what will happen with the University of Minnesota has been at the center. Meanwhile the University recently announced its own plans to grow, which officials say were pushed up by the merger proposal.

'Brotherless Night' explores a young Sri Lankan woman's life, love and idealism set against civil war. Twin Cities writer V.V. Ganeshananthan didn’t expect her second novel to take so long to write. But after almost two decades “Brotherless Night,” a tale set against the Sri Lankan civil war, is drawing critical acclaim. It’s a depiction of a determined young woman struggling with life, love and family even as her country descends into chaos.

Rep. María Isa brings hip-hop to the Minnesota House. The same day that newly elected Rep. María Isa Pérez-Vega was sworn into office, she released a hip-hop EP, Capitolio, inspired by her campaign run, motherhood, community and day-to-day living.

U president quits Securian Financial board amid criticism. University of Minnesota President Joan Gabel said Monday that she's resigned from the board of a St. Paul financial services company.
