The Minnesota House of Representatives passed a bill that would allow non-citizens to apply for and obtain driver’s licenses if they pass the required tests. Rep. María Isa Pérez-Vega, DFL-St. Paul, is one of the bill’s authors and she said that she’d taken a role as a godmother to many kids in her community because their parents couldn’t legally drive because of their immigration status. She urged policymakers to pass the bill to ensure that immigrant communities could drive legally and obtain insurance.
