Now that the festivities of the Fourth are behind you, it’s time to treat yourself. May we suggest a staycation? We know, we know: For at least a little while, you’d much rather get away to someplace other than your living room—but as summer heats up, there’s growing evidence that staying home is the best option. A staycation doesn’t need to be boring! In fact, it could be your best vacation ever! Set a beginning and end date and, if you can, take time off from work. Make sleeping in, playing outside, and having fun a priority. Mix up your routine. Get the kids to make breakfast for the family every morning. Try new recipes or get takeout from your favorite restaurant or some place you’ve always wanted to try. Take up a new hobby. Go to a drive-in. Spend a day leisurely reading with a favorite drink at arm’s reach. While you might feel the need to spend your time off doing chores, unless it’s something you’ll enjoy, resist the urge to do anything more than relaxing—whatever this looks like for you. You don’t always have to be busy and productive; invest time in de-stressing. You’ve earned it. Did you know that July is the warmest month in most of North America? Wherever you’re staycationing, you’ll need a strategy to stay cool. We have you covered—or maybe that should be “uncovered”! While we’re on the topic of heat, watering your garden wisely can make the difference between plants that thrive under the Sun’s rays or wither away. If you want to give your garden an extra level of protection, consider mulching. What’s better than ice cream in the heart of summer? Not much, as far as we can tell. Make your own with these ice cream recipes and accompanying tips to make sure that yours is creamy and decadent. Go for classic flavors like Strawberry or Vanilla or experiment with Avocado or Crème Fraîche–Blueberry. Meanwhile, at mealtime: Simple summer suppers are the best, and nothing is easier or more refreshing than salad. Don’t settle for wilted lettuce topped with store-bought dressing! Try these hearty, healthy, and delicious salad recipes for meals that you and your family won’t forget!
