New Minnesota gun restrictions reach final legislative votes
The proposals include expanding background checks to more sales, allowing for temporary removal of guns from people in crisis and the possibility some people in prison could get out sooner with program involvement. Also included: language about bias-motivated crimes and altered procedures around pardons.

Taconite processing plant material
For the first time, EPA to require taconite plants to slash mercury emissions
The rule would require the six taconite processing plants in northeastern Minnesota to cut their emissions by 57 percent by the end of 2026. In 1990, Congress first required the EPA to set these standards by the year 2000. But the agency never did, and some argue the new requirement doesn't go far enough.

🍃 Legal marijuana talks start fast as time fades on Minnesota lawmakers
People would be able to begin growing their own marijuana this summer, with limits on the number of plants and harvestable cannabis at any given time. Homegrown marijuana couldn’t be sold, but small amounts could be given away to personal contacts.

Outside Shafer, Minn., past honey stalls and grazing cows, rolling green hills are dotted with handcrafted pottery. Folks from around the world have descended on the valley for one of the biggest ceramic events in the country: The annual St. Croix Valley Pottery Tour, which runs May 12-14. 
🚨 Public concerned over rowdiness in Dinkytown; officials say crime rates down
Law enforcement agencies are upping security measures in Dinkytown after bouts of crime this month, but officials say apprehension about safety is overblown. Crime in Dinkytown has declined over the last year and the juvenile crime rate remains steady, with the exception of auto thefts, an officer with the MPD says.

"When people talk about Kaitie, terms like infectious smile, words like confident or loving always come up." Leising was shot and killed last weekend after responding to a call of a drunk driver in a ditch near Glenwood City, Wis. The man suspected of killing her fled the scene and was later found dead from a gunshot wound.
💰 DFLers say they’ll bypass GOP on public works bill
A $1.3 billion cash-only capital investment bill is in the works, and Minnesota DFLers say they'll move forward without requiring GOP votes to pass. This comes with a little more than a week left in the legislative session and negotiations with Senate Republicans still in limbo.
