We're on the up n' up through the weekend. Tomorrow will warm into the 80s again across most of western and northern Minnesota except near the North Shore (sorry friends ... but hey, you've got a great view up there!) Paid leave is now Minnesota law: What you need to know
Just in today: Minnesota joins about a dozen states with a guarantee to partially paid time off to bond with a new child, to care for a seriously ill relative or to deal with one’s own health problems. The leave benefit starts in 2026 and doesn't depend on where a person works.

Supreme Court rules in favor of woman who got nothing when Hennepin County took her condo
Geraldine Tyler's constitutional rights were violated by taking her property without paying “just compensation,” the SCOTUS ruled unanimously today. She owed $15,000 when the county took her apartment in 2015, keeping the entire $40,000 when it sold.

🚗 Walz vetoes bill adding protections for Uber, Lyft drivers
Today Gov. Tim Walz rejected his first bill since becoming governor in 2019, saying he will work on legislation to pass next year. Drivers say they are facing en route violence and ride hailing apps pocket most of the profit.
🪴 MN state agencies set target to begin issuing retail licenses for marijuana
Weed still isn't legal until Gov. Walz signs it into law, but retail licenses for legal sales are looking like they'll start next year. Likely beginning this August, people could start growing their own plants at home (within limits).
📈 (TW: Mental health) Minnesota sees an increase in suicide deaths
After a dip during the first year of the pandemic, suicide rates here rose again during 2021 and 2022. A new Department of Health report released today shows 808 suicide deaths in 2021, and preliminary numbers show 831 suicide deaths in 2022.
💵 What to know about Minnesota's tax rebate checks
Money talk: Minnesotans who meet the income limits can expect rebates between $260 and $1,300 starting this fall, via direct deposit and checks. Taxpayers don't need to apply for these or make any action, unless your address or bank information has changed since filing your 2021 tax return.
