$260 tax rebate deposits catching some Minnesotans by surprise
(But not you, newsletter readers!) Direct deposits have wrapped up and checks are mailing out through early September. Qualified but aren't seeing the money? Hold off until October to ask about a possible payment that hasn’t arrived.

⚕️ Health update: COVID-19 continues to inch upward, deaths by suicide on the rise
COVID levels are still low but are very clearly trending up. And suicide rates, both in Minnesota and nationally, are increasing. Let's break down the numbers.
⚖️ Judge rejects Minnesota abuse victims' suit against Vatican
Three brothers sued the Holy See in 2019 over sexual abuse by former St. Paul priest Curtis Wehmeyer that had started around a decade prior when they were children. A fourth plaintiff alleged a priest at an Apple Valley, Minn., parish, abused him in 1981.
🐕 With better adoption prospects, MN shelters see influx of dogs from across the U.S.
The Humane Society used to hear from about 70 shelters regularly trying to ship dogs to Minnesota. Now it’s about 230. Factors: the end of pandemic-era renter protections and financial aid, the waning of working from home and no-kill policies in place at more shelters. In other words: Maybe it's time to adopt that pup.
🎡 Minnesota State Fair neighbors eye safety, parking as get-together nears
It's (nearly) time! Living near the fairgrounds means smelling fried food, hearing Grandstand concerts and ending the night with a fireworks show. But neighbors say it can be a lot more stressful than folks realize, with safety, noise and parking concerns.
🚲 'Biking far with friends': Minnesota Randonneurs take 745-mile ride through France
They're just out for a ... little ride! This weekend, 15 members of a Minnesota cycling group will be in France riding in the oldest long-distance road cycling event in the world: 745 miles in 80 to 90 hours. For what it's worth, I'm not one of those 15.
