Midwest races see uptick in registrations after Twin Cities Marathon canceled
Some runners, disappointed by the cancellation after training all summer, opted to unofficially run the marathon and 10 mile courses. But some also have been signing up for other races this fall like the Whistle Step and Mankato marathons.

Charges in Madeline Kingsbury killing raised to first-degree murder
Authorities in June initially charged Fravel with second-degree murder when Kingsbury's remains were found, but a Winona County attorney said more charges may come. In Minnesota, only a grand jury can charge first-degree murder.

🚓 Minneapolis City Council rejects MPD officer's workers' comp claim
A committee of the Minneapolis City Council has rejected the $145,000 workers' compensation claim of a police officer who beat a man during unrest following the killing of George Floyd.
👠 Guilty plea expected in 'Wizard of Oz' ruby slipper theft
In May, a federal grand jury indicted Terry Jon Martin, 76, on one count of stealing an object of cultural heritage from a museum. Authorities allege that Martin took the slippers from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minn., in a 2005 smash-and-grab burglary. Garland was born Frances Ethel Gumm in Grand Rapids in 1922.

As of Oct. 1, more than 800,000 Minnesotans are starting to pay back federal student loans worth $27 billion for the first time in three years. The median debt for a Minnesotan who has a bachelor’s degree with student-loan debt was $23,858 in 2021.
💳 The Dept. of Revenue finished processing rebate checks. Here's what to know
It sent just over 2 million direct deposits and paper checks — totaling nearly a billion dollars — to eligible Minnesotans over the last 45 days. The first one-time tax rebate payments went out through direct deposit on August 16.
