Historic North Shore lodge destroyed in overnight fire

The lodge was fully engulfed in flames as crews from eight fire departments battled the fire. Resort officials said it’s a total loss. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.

Minnesota's electric vehicle rebate program opens Wednesday

Both new and used electric vehicles purchased or leased on or after May 25, 2023, are eligible. For new vehicles, the rebates are up to $2,500. For used vehicles, it’s up to $600.

🏛️ DFLer Erin Murphy picked as new Senate majority leader on cusp of session start
Democrats selected Murphy as the top figure in the caucus days after Majority Leader Kari Dziedzic announced that she would step down from the role for health reasons. Murphy, 63, previously was a House majority leader for the DFL back in 2013 and 2014.

🏫 St. Paul schools teachers union set to vote on whether to strike
Union leaders voted unanimously to authorize a Feb. 15 strike vote for all three bargaining groups — teachers, educational assistants and school and community service professionals. St. Paul educators have been working without a contract since July of last year.

⚖️ MN woman accused of trying to get twin sister to take fall for fatal Amish buggy crash
Samantha Jo Petersen, 35, of Kellogg, was charged in Fillmore County District Court on Monday with 21 counts including criminal vehicular homicide and driving under the influence of drugs. The Sept. 25 crash killed 7-year-old Wilma Miller and 11-year-old Irma Miller.

⚖️ Trump is not immune from prosecution, U.S. appeals court says
A federal appeals panel ruled Tuesday that Donald Trump can face trial on charges that he plotted to overturn the results of the 2020 election. It also sets the stage for additional appeals from the Republican ex-president that could reach the U.S. Supreme Court.

🌧️ How are atmospheric rivers affected by climate change?
The second atmospheric river to hit the West Coast in as many weeks has stalled over Southern California, dumping more than 9 inches of rain over 24 hours in some areas near Los Angeles. Climate change has primed the atmosphere to hold more water.
