Happy smogday, or as our editor said this afternoon: Desolation of Smog day (any Lord of the Rings fans?). The widespread Minnesota air quality alert has been extended through tomorrow night, thanks to calm weather. Check out the latest on Updraft.

Worst winter air quality in Minnesota since 2005. Why is it so bad?
Speaking of that air quality, we've got answers: Over the past few days, Minnesota has seen very quiet weather, with no strong winds to disperse particulates and other pollution in the air. A temperature inversion in the atmosphere acts as a lid of sorts to keep pollutants near the ground.

Party lines hold as abortion bill moves through MN Legislature
Today marked more progress for DFLers hoping to to shore up abortion and other reproductive health access in Minnesota in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that overturned Roe vs. Wade: The Health and Human Services Committee voted 6-3 to push the bill forward.

🦠 Osterholm: Newest COVID variant could drive hospitalizations higher here
XBB1.5 is the newest COVID-19 omicron subvariant and it’s spreading now across the United States. The World Health Organization calls it the "most transmissible yet."
While it hasn’t reached Minnesota in significant numbers, its spread is renewing worries of another wave of COVID cases and hospitalizations.
☃️ Will heavy winter snows quench Minnesota's drought?
The Twin Cities region is on track for its third snowiest winter ever, but that doesn’t mean the drought is over. The speed of the spring thaw will dictate how much of that needed moisture makes it into the ground — and slower is better.
⚾ Reports: Correa returns to Twins for 6 more years, $200M
Pending a physical, the Minnesota Twins have re-signed superstar shortstop Carlos Correa, who had 22 home runs, 64 runs batted in and hit 291 in one season with the team. He opted out of the last two years with the team to explore the free agent market.
