The Breakthrough Cancer Research Summer Scholarship Programme is designed to connect students with top research teams to cultivate the next generation of leaders in cancer research.
Each successful student is awarded €3,000 to conduct their chosen research in the realm of poor prognosis cancers over the summer period. This year, there are seven successful candidates. Their areas of research are outlined below. You can click on their image or name to read more details about their projects.
Kimya Ghaffarian from University College Cork on the impact of palliative and ablative radiotherapy on poor prognosis cancers.
Nazia Rafiq from Trinity College Dublin aims to improve the treatment of seizures associated with brain tumours.
Adam Daly from Dublin City University will be exploring the information and communication needs of people with lung cancer.
Saoirse Doyle from the National University of Ireland Maynooth will examine drug treatments that could improve survival rates and minimise side effects for people with ovarian cancer.
Alex Neuroth from Dublin City University will study the effects of physical activity and nutritional health on people with ovarian cancer before and after surgery.
Emily Carvalho from University College Cork will look to identify how certain proteins and molecules affect drug resistance and cell behaviour in ovarian cancer.
Markus Hahn from Paris Lodron University Salzburg will investigate potential new treatments for pancreatic cancer.

In this episode, Trinity College Dublin PhD student David Hackett and Associate Professor in Translational Oncology in Trinity Translational Medicine Institute Stephen Maher, are joined by Pamela Deasy, who is a survivor of Pancreatic Cancer, to talk all about the disease.
Pamela talks about her personal experience with Pancreatic Cancer, Stephen explains the importance of research and the importance of early diagnosis, while David discusses his investigation of a drug that may improve how pancreatic cancer cells respond to chemotherapy. This research is only possible because of people like you so thank you for all your support.

NATIONAL STREET COLLECTION
We are thrilled to announce that our annual National Street Collection will be taking place this September, leading up to World Cancer Research Day. This event is a cornerstone of our fundraising, and it allows us to continue the vital research that makes a real difference in the lives of people with cancer.
Our work is entirely funded by the generosity of the public. That’s why being able to take to the streets of Ireland for this national fundraising drive is so meaningful. It’s not just about raising money; it’s about connecting with the people our research supports, hearing their stories, and sharing our mission with the wider community.
But we can’t do it without you . We’re reaching out to ask if you, your company, or anyone you know would be willing to help us make this event a success? We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to assist at locations across the country. Whether you can spare just a few hours or the entire day, your contribution would be invaluable to us.
