| Your guide to the Booker Prize shortlist | Some were surprised that Hilary Mantel didn’t make the cut. After all, the first two books in her Thomas Cromwell trilogy both won the prestigious literary prize, and many consider the final instalment her best. But instead of featuring well-known names like Mantel or Colum McCann, the shortlist for this year’s Booker Prize is dominated by newcomers. Four of the six are debut novels. It’s also the most diverse shortlist to date, with four writers of colour. So, in the lead-up to the announcement of the big prize in November, how can you get up to speed on these books and their authors? First, you can read this article, where RN’s books specialists – Claire Nichols, Sarah L’Estrange and Kate Evans – share their thoughts on each one. Then, hear the interviews that Claire and Sarah have done with each of the authors. And if you were busy on Wednesday night and missed it live, make sure you catch up on Generation 2020 – a special event from ABC Science taking a look at what life could be like in a resilient Australia.
