Gas pipeline approved near pipestone quarry sacred to Indigenous people, with conditions

A gas pipeline has gotten a green light near a sacred Indigenous site, but concerns linger over cultural risks and tribal consultation. "We’ll see," said Gabe Yellowhawk, chair of the Pipestone Human Rights Commission. "Whether or not consultation takes place and if the tribes can really trust [the pipeline company] at this point to uphold consultation remains to be seen."

At least 1 Minneapolis school reports measles case, district stresses up-to-date vaccinations

Minneapolis Public Schools says measles has been identified in at least one of the district’s schools. The district asked parents to make sure kids are up-to-date on their vaccinations and to watch for symptoms like a rash, fever and a cough. The Minnesota Department of Health recommends that anyone with symptoms should stay home and avoid visitors.

The campus has been working on developing a “postvention plan” — a coordinated response among university officials, faculty and staff and some students — in the case of another student death on campus. Nearing a year since losing four students to suicide in just two months, the campus of just 5,000 students said it was treating the losses as a “suicide cluster.”

From our news partners at ICT: Sydney Freeland, Navajo, co-wrote the story with Sterlin Harjo, Seminole Nation. She said it was important for her and Harjo to write a story based on Indigenous characters that opposes the “White savior trope” where a non-Native comes into the story to save and teach the Indigenous people how to be better.

Walkie-talkies, solar equipment and other devices exploded suddenly Wednesday at the site of a funeral for three Hezbollah members and a child killed by exploding pagers the day before, according to Associated Press journalists at the scene.
