The thrill is gone: Como Park corpse flower closes, ending bloom early

The 20,000 people who flocked to Como Park Zoo and Conservatory in St. Paul on Thursday and waited hours in line to see Horace the blooming corpse flower must be celebrating their good judgment. The flower closed back up overnight without fully blooming, ending the show surprisingly early.

Weekend of George Floyd memorials begins with prayer service

George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis police four years ago Saturday. Faith leaders from local churches, mosques and synagogues gathered in downtown Minneapolis on Friday for a morning of prayers, opening a weekend of events marking the day. “It's about rallying our community for healing, understanding, and solidarity.”

️🔑 Red Wing nursing home closure will displace 50 residents
Significant financial and structural deficiencies led to the decision to close the facility, according to the Minnesota Department of Health. It needs “extensive capital repairs that the state of Minnesota is unable to complete by law.”
🛶 National Guard joins search for 2 missing canoeists in BWCA
The missing canoeists have been identified as Jesse Haugen, 41, of Cambridge, and Reis Grams, 40, of Lino Lakes. The two men have been missing since last Saturday.
🏫 Native students at Hinckley-Finlayson High School to host powwow after graduation
Earlier this month the school board rejected a petition from the school’s Native American student group to have a drum group perform an Ojibwe traveling song during graduation. Organizers expect more than 500 people to attend the parking lot powwow, scheduled to start at 8:30 p.m. Friday, after the graduation ceremony concludes.
🏒 ‘Top of their game’: PWHL Minnesota coach lauds team, reflects on season
They still don’t have an official title, but they’re quickly becoming a household name. The Professional Women’s Hockey League Minnesota team is gearing up for Game 3 in a best-of-five series Friday night at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. They players are skating against Boston for the inaugural Walter Cup. Each team, fourth and third seed respectively, has a win under its belt.
🌧️ May squashes drought with trend of wet weather and brings strong winds
There are expected to be more rainy days ahead and drought has practically vanished from the state. Only about 9 percent of the state is designated as a moderate drought, which is primarily carried over from last year.
🍔 Feel like the restaurant industry is failing? It may just be moving
In 2019, the number of liquor licenses for Minneapolis restaurants was just above 700. That number dropped during the pandemic but is nearly back to where it was before, suggesting that the industry is more or less at pre-pandemic strength despite its shift to neighborhood joints.
