"Go back" day 3

  • A non-binding resolution condemning President Trump's remarks as racist passed the House on a mostly party-line vote Tuesday [NYT].
  • President Trump dug in on Tuesday saying on Twitter that the racist language in his tweets wasn't racist [Politico].
  • White House counselor Kellyanne Conway stepped in it on Tuesday. She was asked a question about Trump's racist tweets. Conway snapped back at the reporter asking about his ethnicity, which happened to be Jewish [CNN].
  • Texas Democrat Al Green filed articles of impeachment against President Trump, which will trigger a vote on the issue in the near future [WaPo].
  • A new poll finds most Americans call Trump's tweets targeting four progressive congresswomen "un-American" [USA Today].

Hmmm. A new poll found support for President Trump rose among Republican voters following his racist Twitter attack on four Democratic congresswomen [Reuters].


Budget crisis. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says there's been "progress" in talks to secure a two-year budget agreement and raise the debt limit. The Treasury is warning it may run out of money sometime in September. Congress leaves for a month at the end of next week [Politico].


Slim majority of voters approve of immigration raids. A new poll finds 51% say they support raids by immigration officials touted by President Trump [Politico].


2020

  • 20 Democrats have qualified for the second Democratic primary debate to be held next week in Detroit [Politico].
  • Former North Carolina Rep. Mark Sanford says he's considering challenging President Trump for the GOP nomination next year. Sanford lost a primary election in 2018 after Trump attacked him on Twitter [Roll Call].

Trade. President Trump said during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday he could impose more tariffs on China if he wanted to [Bloomberg].


Former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens passes. Stevens, who was appointed by President Gerald Ford, served 35 years on the high court. He was 99 [NYT].


Big news on the left. Planned Parenthood ousted president Leanna Wen after less than a year on the job [NYT].


For your radar. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is proposing fewer inspections of the nations nuclear power plants as a cost-cutting measure [AP].


ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

1867 - Harvard School of Dental Medicine is established in Boston. It is the first dental school in the U.S. that is affiliated with a university.

1918 - Russian Czar Nicholas II and his family were killed by Bolsheviks who held them captive for two months.

1938 - Douglas Corrigan takes off from Brooklyn to fly the "wrong way" to Ireland and becomes know as "Wrong Way" Corrigan.

1955 - Disneyland is dedicated and opened by Walt Disney in Anaheim, California.

1975 - An American Apollo and a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft dock with each other in orbit, marking the first such link-up between spacecraft from the two nations.

1981 - 114 people were killed and 200 injured in the collapse of two suspended walkways at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Kansas City, Mo.

1984 - The national drinking age in the U.S. was changed from 18 to 21.

1996 - TWA Flight 800, New York to Paris, crashed off the Long Island coast, killing all 230 people aboard.

Gov. Gary R. Herbert has ordered the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the State of Utah on Thursday, July 18, 2019 to honor the life and service of Sergeant First Class Elliott Jerome Robbins, who will be laid to rest that day with military honors at Ben Lomond Cemetery in North Ogden, Utah.
