A Message From the Editor

Last week, I got a Facebook friend request from my wife’s grandmother. It seemed normal—it had her profile picture, her accurate location, a recent status and even a mutual friend or two. I was about to click accept until I realized, “Wait, aren’t I already friends with her?” Indeed I was—this was a spoof account, one that had already tricked other members of her family. And I was almost next. Just because we’re engaged in technology and the law doesn’t mean that we’re immune to phishing attacks, as a number of Legaltech News and ALM articles have explored this week. It could be email spoofing, like our Victoria Hudgins explored this week. It could be faking client credentials, as The Legal Intelligencer’s Max Mitchell found in Philadelphia. It could even be outside scammers using the firm’s name, as has been prevalent in the U.K. The risks range from monetary to reputational, but they all have one thing in common: Nobody’s immune. It doesn’t matter how smart you are or sophisticated your technology is; everybody should have their guard up as phishing attacks only become more common.
