The highly anticipated winter weather forecast is here! And as we celebrate the beginning of winter this December, we’re looking at some interesting weather. We’re moving from Solar Cycle 24 (the smallest in more than 100 years!) to Solar Cycle 25. Cycle 25 also comes with low solar activity, but here’s where things get tricky. Low solar activity historically brings cooler average temperature across the Earth. This year, however, we expect recent warming trends to dominate across most of the country, with below-normal average temperatures limited mostly to the western portions of the U.S.
What does that mean in reality? Well, you might be a little chilly in Maine, as well as the Intermountain, Desert Southwest, Pacific Southwest, and eastern Hawaii regions. Otherwise, expect temperatures to hover around or above normal.
While you may not be piling on the layers, you may still want to keep those fireplaces ready. Most of the country can expect a fair share of either rain or snow throughout the winter. Although we have officially dubbed one part of the country “gorgeous” this winter. Where is that, you ask? What about the rest of us? Can we expect cool and dry? Cold and slushy? Lots of snow?

| How To Stay Healthy This Winter | Whether you like your weather warm or cold, one thing we can usually count on when the temperature drops and precipitation drips is the onset of colds and the flu. There are, fortunately, some time-tested tips for keeping healthy. Some you might expect: wash your hands, drink plenty of water, and get plenty of sleep.
Other tips, however well they may work, aren’t so well-known. For instance, did you know that onions may have antibacterial properties and can help reduce your risk of catching a cold? You may know that, should you get a cold, eating spicy food can clear your sinuses. But did you also know that consuming small chunks of raw garlic may help prevent colds?
In fact, a number of herbs and spices have well-documented healing properties. Ginger is known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral capabilities. Thyme can kill germs and fight infection, plus it goes great in a pot of stew! |  | | Speaking Of Food | We love including some of our favorite recipes in The Old Farmer’s Almanac. This year we’re featuring a traditional New England favorite: Maple syrup! Pure maple syrup (not that maple-flavored pancake syrup) is a versatile ingredient. Just a little can go a long way in making your breakfast, lunch, or dinner just a little sweeter.
The recipes include a healthy and filling breakfast item that stands on its own or is equally delightful mixed with yogurt. There’s a sweet and spicy dip that is phenomenal with a soft pretzel, and a glaze that will turn your baked winter squash into a restaurant-worthy delight. You really can’t go wrong with maple syrup, even if you try.
If that’s not enough, don’t forget that you’ll find the winners of our annual recipe contest featured in this year’s Almanac. The challenge is always one of our favorites, because, after all, we have to try them before we publish them, right? The Buffalo Eggs are pure YUM. The Stuffed Jalapenos? Oh. My. Word! Amazing.
