De overheid leek ervan uit te gaan, dat iedere burger een potentiële fraudeur was. Maar dat is niet alleen iets van de regering-Rutte. | | | | | De mist ligt als een grauwe deken over de polder op de ochtend van 8 januari 1962. Op het spoor tussen Harmelen en Woerden staat zoals gebruikelijk rond negen uur het passeren van twee treinen gepland, die een stukje van hetzelfde spoor gebruiken. Sneltrein 164 met 900 passagiers rijdt vanuit Leeuwarden naar Rotterdam en stoptrein 464 rijdt met 180 passagiers van Rotterdam naar Amsterdam. Even na negenen gaat het mis. De sneltrein vertrekt zes minuten te laat vanuit Utrecht, waarna de machinist een sein mist om zijn vaart te minderen en te laat is met stoppen. Om 9.19 uur botsen de twee treinen op elkaar. 93 mensen komen om het leven en 52 mensen raken gewond. Het is de grootste treinramp uit de Nederlandse geschiedenis. In de enorme hoeveelheid puin die de botsing veroorzaakt, wordt door overlevenden en hulpverleners tegelijk naar andere overlevenden gezocht. Drie dagen later rijden er weer treinen op hoge snelheid over hetzelfde stuk spoor. Alleen de wrakstukken langs het spoor herinneren nog aan het ongeval. 50 jaar later reconstrueren overlevenden die tragische dag in een documentaire. | | Woonboten in Maastricht stroomden met het water mee. Hevige regen leidde tot het doorbreken van een deel van een dijk. Water als vriend en als vijand bleek weer het oer-thema van de Nederlandse geschiedenis te zijn. Door de jaren heen probeerde Nederland het water te bedwingen, maar deze week was het ontembaar. Het is niet de eerste keer dat Limburg worstelde met het water. Ook in 1926 dreven de meubels door de kamer. | | Dry January is weer begonnen, een maand lang gaat bij velen een slot op de drankkast. Nuchter is hip! Misschien maar beter ook. Hoewel alcoholvrije drankjes steeds populairder worden, kruipen er nog elk jaar mensen onder invloed achter het stuur. Met Dry January weer een mogelijkheid om jezelf en anderen het goede voorbeeld te geven. Een goed voorbeeld dat bijvoorbeeld in de zatte jaren '70 ver te zoeken was. Zelfs politici werden er meerdere malen op betrapt: een borrel bij late vergaderingen en tóch naar huis rijden. De hele bevolking raakte in de ban van de alcohol. | De tentoonstelling met fotografie door verzetsfotograaf Cas Oorthuys (1908-1975) verdwijnt 14 januari uit het Verzetsmuseum. Oorthuys legde, met gevaar voor eigen leven, legale en illegale beelden van verzetsactiviteiten vast tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
