What is causing the quarrels and fights among us? Isn’t it the whole army of evil desires at war within me?

When I want what I don’t have, I scheme and kill to get it. When I am jealous for what others have, and I can’t possess it, I fight and quarrel to take it away from them. And yet the reason I don’t have what I want is that I don’t ask You, God, for it.

And even when I do ask, I don’t get it because my whole motive is wrong--I want only what will give me pleasure.

Adulterers! Don’t I realize that friendship with this world makes me an enemy of You, God? I say it again, that if my aim is to enjoy this world, I can’t be a friend of Yours, O God.
