Can you tell the difference between a human reading a news story and a robot reading you that news story? My colleague, Patrick Kulp, looked at the practice of how more media organizations are turning to AI to narrate their articles and offer audio versions of coverage. McClatchy, Gannett, and Canadian national newspaper The Globe and Mail have each tried out using the technology, which takes thousands of hours of human speech patterns to create a text-to-speech tool. Some media properties are seeing success, after pilot tests at The Sacramento Bee and Raleigh News & Observer found a 168% increase in time spent on the news site and an 89% boost in story pageviews.
