DDR MUSEUM 10 years of DDR Museum |
PREFACE OF THE CHIEF SCIENTIST |
A Decade of “a hands on experience“ . Dear readers, this summer is an exciting and eventful time for the DDR Museum. It has been ten years since the DDR Museum has opened and a lot has happened - interesting projects were developed, success was being celebrated and more than 4.400.000 visitors were welcomed. Currently, we are working intensely on a new section of our exhibition, which will be presented on August, 27th 2016 for the "Long Night Of Museums". Until then, much has to be done - thus, this period signifies intense work for our whole DDR Museum-Team. Dr. Stefan Wolle |
DDR MUSEUMS’ ENLARGEMENT |
10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DDR MUSEUM |
One glance back For ten years now the DDR Museum exists- and it was an eventful time: Opened on July 15th 2006, the DDR Museum expanded quickly and enlarged their area with the "Besucherzentrum" in 2008. Also two years later, in 2010, the first expansion of the exhibition followed. Besides nominations for the European Museum of the Year Award in 2008 and 2012, the Museum won the „Geschichte erinnern - Gegenwart gestalten" - Award by the Federal Agency for Civic Education for the educational game „Bürokratopoly" in 2014. |

In a nation's state, the folk song has a safe haven – one might think. In fact, Dr. Wolfgang Steinitz inspired the folk music scene both in the East and the West with his book "Deutsche Volkslieder demokratischen Characters" ("German folk songs with a democratic character", published in 1954 and 1962). But when it came to the Anglo-saxon influence, the cultural authority of the SED was not amused very often. In 1976, Wolfgang Leyn was one of the founding members of the group Folkländer which belonged to the most successful folk bands in the GDR. He therefore knows what he is talking about when he describes and documents the contradictory development of the folk scene. Discussion between: Wolfgang Leyn, online editor for MDR, Leipzig Sören Marotz, Head of Collections at the DDR Museum, Berlin Date: July 19th, 2016 Time: 7pm Location: Visitor Center Entry fee: Free |

For former East-Berliners, the eastern part of Germany's capital today is one of the strangest cities in the world. Some things have disappeared, many things were built anew and everything looks different. But just like on a photo which has been exposed multiple times, the observer still sees the old streets and buildings. There are good and bad memories lurking at every corner. The well-known crime author Jan Eik will dig deep into the box of memories and will be telling stories from the 34 years which he has spend in this divided city. Reading with: Ja Eik, author, Berlin Date: August 4th, 2016 Time: 7pm Location: Visitor Center Entry fee: Free |

It is quite difficult to put a label on Wolfgang Herzberg. He was born in 1944 as a son of German-Jewish emigrants in England, studied at the Humboldt University Berlin, popularized "oral history" as the first GDR-historian and wrote texts for his brother André Herzberg's successful rock opera by using a pseudonym. In 1990, his interview book with Erich Honecker became the last bestseller of the GDR. On this evening, Herzberg will present his own texts and songs, tell stories from his life and discuss the question of what is going wrong with the rehabilitation of the GDR nowadays with the audience. Reading with: Wolfgang Herzberg, publicist and songwriter, Berlin Date: September 8th, 2016 Time: 7pm Location: Visitor Center Entry fee: Free |

It is hard to believe: The princess Tausendschön from the DEFA-movie "Das singende, klingende Bäumchen" ("The singing, chinking little tree") is more than 70 years old today. As only a fairy tale can do, the role of the arrogant king's daughter has praised her with eternal youth. Until this day, faces turn all dreamy when it comes to the "Bäumchen". The first successes were followed by many other main roles in movies and TV productions. In the 1960s and 1970s, she belonged to the most popular actresses in the GDR and was also active as a singer of chansons. Alexander G. Schäfer will question her about her exciting life. Discussion between: Christel Bodenstein, actress, Berlin Alexander G. Schäfer, actor, Berlin Date: September 22nd, 2016 Time: 7pm Location: Visitor Center Entry fee: Free |
