Tuesday’s hearing included a proposal to sever the trials of the three other defendants from Chauvin.
| Sept. 14, 2021 Four former Minneapolis police officers pleaded not guilty Tuesday to federal charges of depriving George Floyd of his civil rights under the Constitution. Derek Chauvin is in prison after a jury found him guilty of murder in state court in April. Chauvin knelt on Floyd's neck while J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane held Floyd on the ground as Floyd said repeatedly he couldn't breathe. Tou Thao kept people back who begged the officers to get up and he did not intervene. Kueng, Lane and Thao also face state charges of aiding and abetting Floyd's murder in May of 2020. Tuesday’s arraignment and motions hearing was overseen by U.S. District Magistrate Judge Tony Leung, and included a proposal to sever the trials of the three other defendants from Chauvin. Four Twin Cities residents found shot to death in an abandoned SUV in rural Dunn County, Wis., have no apparent ties to the county, Sheriff Kevin Bygd told reporters Tuesday afternoon. Authorities don’t yet have suspects but don’t believe the person or people who are responsible for the killings come from the area or are still in the area, he added.
Asked about a motive, he said, “That one is a mystery. We do not know a motive yet.” Subscribe to our Minnesota Today podcast to get up-to-date Minnesota news twice daily. — Tim Nelson, MPR News | |
