A team of Oxford researchers were able to sequence two-thirds of the genome of Ludwig Van Beethoven based on samples from a handful of locks of the great composer’s hair—some 200 years after his death. While they couldn’t pin down the reason he infamously went deaf, the scientists did find markers suggesting Beethoven died from liver disease, likely caused by a combination of alcohol use, viral hepatitis, and underlying genetic factors. |
