| | | | | | Resveratrol is a compound found in grape skin and seeds, cranberries, blueberries, and peanuts. It is promoted as a dietary supplement for preventing heart disease and cancer, and as an anti-aging product. Resveratrol showed antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anticancer, and cardioprotective effects in laboratory and animal studies. Although resveratrol improved biomarkers associated with Alzheimer’s disease in a clinical trial, a meta-analysis did not find any significant effect on memory or cognitive performance. Whether resveratrol reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease is also not clear as findings are mixed. Preliminary findings suggest resveratrol may decrease tumor cell proliferation, but it also showed estrogen-like properties that may stimulate growth of some cancer cells. Larger trials are needed for definitive data. High doses of resveratrol can cause gastrointestinal side effects, such as diarrhea. | | | |

| | | Take Note Of Rooibos Tea | | Rooibos is a plant native to South Africa. Tea prepared from its dried leaves has grown popular in Western countries because it is low in caffeine and rich in antioxidants. Experiments done in rats suggest that prolonged exposure to rooibos may affect the reproductive system, impair fertility, or affect liver and kidney function. Studies in humans are very limited and further research is needed. Liver toxicity has been reported with long-term use or consuming large amounts of rooibos tea. | | | |
