PARIS (AFP).- Neanderthal man knew how to make a fire by striking stone to create sparks, researchers said Thursday after analysing several tools found at sites in France dating from 50,000 years ago. It was already known that Neanderthals used fire but it was mostly thought to have occurred by natural causes such as lightning or volcanic eruptions, although perhaps they did know techniques for creating a flame. The latter is what scientists of a study published in Scientific Reports have claimed. "We present here the first direct artefactual evidence for regular, systematic fire production by Neanderthals," they wrote in the study. "We found the lighters that Neanderthal man used to make a fire," Marie Soressi, professor of prehistory at Leiden University in the Netherlands and co-author of the study, told AFP. CAIRO (AFP).- Egyptian archaeologists have uncovered a pottery workshop dating back some 4,500 years, officials said Thursday, a rare discovery providing a glimpse into daily life from millenia ago. The find -- which included a stone pottery wheel -- was made close to the southern city of Aswan during work around the Temple of Kom Ombo on the banks of the Nile River, the antiquities ministry said. The workshop was built during the Fourth Dynasty of ancient Egypt (between 2613 and 2494 BC), a statement said, the same period in which the famous pyramids of Giza were constructed. "It is one of the rare finds that sheds light on daily life, industrial activities and the development of art in ancient Egypt," Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, said in the statement. WASHINGTON (AFP).- Adrian Cronauer, whose exploits as a US military disc jockey inspired the film "Good Morning, Vietnam" starring Robin Williams, has died at the age of 79. Cronauer, a former US Air Force sergeant, died on Wednesday, according to an obituary published by a funeral home in Troutville, Virginia, where he lived. No cause of death was given. Cronauer was a co-author of the original story for "Good Morning, Vietnam" which the obituary said was "loosely" based on his 1965-66 service as a host on military radio in Saigon. Story in Reverse is a multi-part slide installation based on Ilse Aichingers Mirror Story (1949), a linguistic experiment that narrates a young womans tragically failed life.
